The Application of Thermoelastic Stress Analysis to Evaluate Debond Damage in Composite Sandwich Structures R K Fruehmann1,a, W Wang1,b, J M Dulieu-Barton1,c and S Quinn1,d 1School of Engineering Sciences, University of Southampton, SO17 1BJ, United Kingdom arkf@soton.ac.uk, bww2g09@soton.ac.uk, cjanice@soton.ac.uk, ds.quinn@soton.ac.uk Keywords: Damage, NDT, TSA, Sandwich structures.
TSA is based on the measurement of the small change in temperature that occurs when a material is subjected to a stress change.
The change in temperature is proportional to the change in the sum of the principal stresses; for the case of an isotropic material the relationship can be written as: (1) where ΔT is the temperature change, T is the absolute temperature, α is the coefficient of thermal expansion, ρ is the density, Cp is the specific heat at constant pressure and Δ(σ1 + σ2) is the change in the sum of the principal stresses.
