This problem can be addressed through the techniques of homogenization of materials with periodic microstructure that have been developed in the last two decades.
In the homogenization procedure the unit cell is associated with a material point of the equivalent homogenized medium.

In crystalline
materials, the problem is mainly dealing with point defects, dislocations, and their interactions.
Introduction This chapter is devoted to relaxation spectroscopy and its use in materials science.
Concluding remarks about relaxation spectroscopies and their use in materials science are given in Section 9.
The same procedure was applied to polymeric materials.

However, biological materials have intrinsic limitations.
MicroCT was used to measure the materials' porosity.
These materials present rather low intrinsic primary mechanical properties.
