The water uptake and loss is thus also of fundamental importance for the proper functioning and the long-time stability of polymer exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFC), because it is related to irreversible dimension changes of the material and a morphological instability, which can be connected to the mechanical properties of the membrane, especially its elastic modulus.
The mechanism through which the adsorbates penetrate into the material is not discussed in detail; the existence of the various is is simply the result of local Langmuir isotherms that control the net balance between the evaporation and condensation rates.
