Abrasive machining is one of the oldest technologies, and continues to have a far-reaching impact on a broad spectrum of industries. In particular, there is an ever-increasing demand by modern manufacturing for advanced abrasive techniques and other precision machining technologies. As well as abrasive-related technologies, electrical discharge machining (EDM), glass molding, machine tool systems, green manufacturing, laser-beam machining, tribology, advanced cutting methods, etc. are addressed here. The more than 167 presentations contributed by workers from all over the world will make this volume essential reading.

Description: During the past twenty years, digital design and manufacturing technology has become indispensable in many and various applications world-wide; involving many products and rapidly expanding markets. It has not only provided industry with new methods, tools and digitalized products - from design, materials processing to operating and management procedures - but is also changing the approaches, thinking patterns and working environments of people in the manufacturing field.
The rapid growth of digital design and manufacturing processes has also brought with it some processing work-flow challenges. While the various resultant products provide an ideal solution for some processing steps, more dedicated and integrated systems are sometimes required. How best can one handle incoming data and orders, automate the design and perhaps engineering, make robust plans, manage the process and data and deliver quality goods.

Abrasive technology concerns manufacturing processes that involve the use of abrasives in various forms. It has a long history; originating right from the first discovery of minerals. With increasingly stringent requirements for the production of high-precision and high surface-quality components, in applications such as silicon wafers for the semiconductor industry and optical lenses for the precision instrument industry, abrasive technology is becoming an increasingly important factor in precision manufacturing. An understanding of the mechanisms of abrasive technology ensures the soundness and integrity of current component manufacture, as well as leading to the development of new and effective techniques.

Enhancing the surface finish and integrity of engineered components is increasingly important; particularly for the parts used in electronic and optical devices and systems. Significant progress has been made, in recent years, in developing new and advanced surface-finishing technologies as well as acquiring a fundamental understanding of the surface finishing technologies in order to predict, control and optimise surface-finishing processes.
The aim of this special volume was to bring together the latest know-how of academic researchers and industrial engineers and present the latest developments and applications in advanced precision surface finishing and de-burring technologies.
