Description: Coating technology has made great strides during recent years. The properties of surface layers determine the function and quality of entire components. Thus, it is essential to obtain information concerning the development and functionality of the topmost layers. The beneficial effect of coating technology can be observed in many manufacturing fields, where it solves problems such as wear, corrosion, erosion, electrical contact, etc. Even decoration falls under this heading.

Description: Volume is indexed by Thomson Reuters CPCI-S (WoS).
This special volume presents the latest advances in the science and technology of high-performance ceramics in China. More than 600 valuable original contributions were sifted, using a strict peer-review process, to yield the more than 229 manuscripts included in this collection. The contributions covered almost all aspects of the field including: functional ceramics, structural ceramics, processing of ceramics and the evaluation of ceramics.

Description: Current water-treatment technologies require considerable energy consumption. Thus, closely linked to the problem of water shortage is the impending energy crisis. Therefore, intensive research is being aimed at developing water purification processes that are based upon using renewable energy, such as solar energy, rather than energy generated using fossil fuels. There has been an accumulation of reports on the development of photocatalysts, which enable water purification using solar energy as the only driving force. Such photocatalysts, based upon oxide semiconductors, permit the conversion of solar energy into the chemical energy that is required for the oxidation of toxic organic compounds in water. The most promising photocatalyst is titanium dioxide, TiO2, and its solid solutions. The research on TiO2 photocatalysis is multidisciplinary, and progress in this area requires the application of concepts of catalysis and photocatalysis as well as concepts of solid-state chemistry.

Description: With the rapid development of science and technology, the functionalization of structural materials, and the structurization of functional materials are attracting increasing attention in the scientific and engineering fields. The development of multi-functional materials and structures (MFMS), at the micro- and nano-scale levels, has grown rapidly due to the requirement of increasing safety margins for all infrastructure, biomedical and engineering elements. Multi-functional material systems are capable of performing multiple “primary” functions, simultaneously or sequentially in time, and are specially designed to improve system performance via a reduction in the redundancy between sub-system materials and functions.
