Description: Sponsored by the Chinese Ceramic Society, the China International Conference on High-Performance Ceramics (CICC) aims to provide an international forum for the presentation, discussion and review of the latest advances in the science and technology of high-performance ceramics.

The present volume contains selected papers from the third conference in the CICC series: CICC-3, which was held from the 9th to the 12th of May, 2004, in Shenzhen, China. It also contains 19 papers which were specially selected by Prof. Chang-Chun Ge and Prof. Jing-Feng Li from among the papers that were submitted to the First International Workshop on Layered and Graded Materials, which was organized as a special session within the framework of CICC-3.

The large number, and high quality, of the papers making up this collection reflect the continuing vigor of the powder-metallurgy industry and associated research all over the world. The emergence of such new fields as nano-materials, cellular materials and process modeling by computer simulation is very evident, while traditional fields such as compaction and sintering are also being tackled anew using more sophisticated concepts and tools. Globalization of the economic structure presents challenging opportunities for powder metallurgy, and there is an increasing demand for high-productivity, low-cost, highquality, new products, together with reduced pollution.

Functionally graded materials (FGM) are also multi-functional materials, which exhibit spatial variations in composition and/or microstructure; created with the specific purpose of controlling variations in thermal, structural or functional properties. In spite of large differences in the type and size scale of the materials considered, many common features exist, thus furnishing a rationale for grouping these materials together in one book.
