Description: Volume is indexed by Thomson Reuters CPCI-S (WoS).
This book reviews recent developments in the field of shape memory materials, which are becoming more and more important as 'smart (intelligent)' materials. The fundamental principles and properties are discussed, as well as the associated experimental and processing methods. Special emphasis is placed on the present, and potential future, applications of SMMs.
Superelastic wires are already being used for the antennae of cellular phones, and medical stents and guide wires promise to become big business as well. Rapid progress is also being made in fundamental aspects, such as the kinetics of martensitic transformations, premartensitic behavior, aging problems, thin-film SMA, etc. Moreover, new experimental techniques are becoming available: such as imaging plane, TEM with energy filter, AFM, grazing-angle x-ray reflection, etc.

Description: Continuing the scope of the preceding Conferences on Intergranular and Interphase Boundaries in Materials, the present conference focused on the atomic-level modeling of interfaces, the structural and chemical characterization of internal interfaces, on their thermodynamic, kinetic, mechanical, electrical, magnetic behavior and high-Tc superconductivity, and on the application of current knowledge to the design of polycrystalline materials having improved properties. Particular attention was paid to non-equilibrium segregation in irradiated materials.
Volume is indexed by Thomson Reuters CPCI-S (WoS).

Description: The term "interface" means different things structurally, according to the materials involved and their thermal and mechanical history. Moreover, an adequate description of an interface may vary considerably, according to the property being related to it.

Description: In 1994 we will mark the tenth anniversary of the discovery of quasicrystals, aperiodic crystals which lie outside the framework of traditional crystallography and which have disturbed the theory and practice of solid state physics, bringing in new perspectives. Already a substantial international community working on this topic has developed, with its own social structure, and it is time to assess the progress of the past decade and to consider future possibilities.

Online since: January 1993
Description: The review and research papers presented in this volume may be subdivided into three aims:
(i) the investigation and modelling of interfacial structure (ii) efforts to correlate structure/property relationships and (iii) phenomenological descriptions of particular interfacial properties The conference focussed on four objectives: 1.Grain Boundaries Structure and Properties 2.Dynamical and Mechanical Properties 3.Heterophase Interfaces 4.Electrical Properties and Superconductors.
