Materials science is a key field in science and technology, and is indispensable for providing the groundwork for the next technological generation. Ceramics, in particular, advanced rapidly during the 20th century. Although current society now faces numerous difficulties with regard to recycling, energy conservation, environmental pollution and safety/reliability issues, ceramics are sure to play an important role in overcoming them.

Interest in the phenomenon of superplasticity has been increasing steadily over the past thirty-four years, both from the viewpoint of fundamental scientific understanding as well as of industrial application. The scope of superplasticity has also broadened materials-wise, and now includes, in addition to metals: intermetallics, ceramics, bulk metallic glasses, nanostructured materials and composites.
