The large number, and high quality, of the papers making up this collection reflect the continuing vigor of the powder-metallurgy industry and associated research all over the world. The emergence of such new fields as nano-materials, cellular materials and process modeling by computer simulation is very evident, while traditional fields such as compaction and sintering are also being tackled anew using more sophisticated concepts and tools. Globalization of the economic structure presents challenging opportunities for powder metallurgy, and there is an increasing demand for high-productivity, low-cost, highquality, new products, together with reduced pollution.

In recent years, the use of nanosized powders and porous materials has been expected to lead to basic breakthrough solutions in the form of prospective nanomaterial products having high-performance and multi-functional properties. For this reason, many industrialised nations have financially supported nanostructured materials development, and their use in technical innovation.

Description: The world production of primary and recycled aluminum continues to increase and, over the past twenty years, has risen from ~15 Mt/y in 1985 to ~32 Mt/y in 2005. The main consumers are transportation, beverage and other packaging, and building construction. The global primary aluminum production has been growing by about 2-3% per year. However, growth rates over the last decade have been much higher. In particular, during the past five years, China has played a critical role in aluminum production and has gone through a dramatic period of growth.

Description: The compilation, 'Advanced Materials and Technologies', explores current research efforts and progress in the design and improvement of the performance of structural and functional materials. In particular, the book deals with the relationship between a material’s production route, its chemical and phase compositions and microstructure on the one hand; and their influence upon every aspect of a wide range of its properties on the other hand: as well as the various factors which affect the efficiency of applied advanced technologies. Special attention is paid to nanostructures and to properties governed by phenomena at the nano- and/or micro-scale.
