The Special Topic Volume is a result from the contribution of forty-one experts from the international scientific community in the respective field of research. It thoroughly covers recent work done in the area of photocatalysis. In recent year a boosting interest in the exploration of renewable energy sources and environmental abatement attracted the promises of photocatalysis particularly in hydrogen production by water splitting, storage of solar energy in sustainable chemical fuels, decomposition and removal of environmental pollutants and disinfection of water. Current environmental concern promises a bright future for this technology, particularly applications to improving the quality of water and of indoor and outdoor air. This volume provides the latest and in-depth coverage to photocatalytic materials and surfaces including their various applications for environmental and energy applications.

Functional nanomaterials are the basis of newly emerging nanotechnologies for various device applications. Nanomaterials with many kinds of morphologies and compositions have been extensively investigated, and display various kinds of functionality in areas such as electronic structure, optical effects, spin dynamics, and gas sensing. Because of advanced characterization and new fabrication techniques, nanomaterials are now central to multiple disciplines, including materials science, chemistry, physics, engineering and medicine. This special volume presents a detailed overview of recent research developments on functional nanomaterials, including synthesis, characterization, and applications.

International Conference on Engineering Materials for Electronics, Communication and Construction 2012 (EMECC 2012) was held on Aug. 25-26, 2012, Hangzhou, China. EMECC was initially created by a network of researchers and engineers both from academia and industry in the areas of material science and mechanics engineering. The goal of EMECC 2012 is to bring together researchers from the academia and practitioners from the industry in order to address fundamentals and applications of material science and mechanics. The conference provides a forum where researchers shall be able to present recent research results and new research problems and directions related to them. The conference seeks contributions presenting novel research in all aspects of new advanced methods for material science and mechanics.

This special-topic volume, Advances in Electronic Materials, covers various fields of materials research such as silicon, silicon-germanium hetero-structures, high-k materials, III-V semiconductor alloys and organic materials, as well as nano-structures for spintronics and photovoltaics. It begins with a brief summary of the formative years of microelectronics; now the keystone of information technology.
The latter remains one of the most important global technologies, and is an extremely complex subject-area. Although electronic materials are primarily associated with computers, the internet and mobile telephones, they are used in many other applications which improve our overall quality of life. The progress made in traditional scientific fields now often depends upon new developments in electronic materials.

Description: This system, consisting of compositions lying between the end-members, CdTe and HgTe, constitutes perhaps the third most important semiconductor after Si and GaAs. Its importance stems from the ability to tailor the band-gap precisely between that (1.5eV) of the semiconductor, CdTe, and the zero value of the semi-metal, HgTe; giving, in particular, one of the most versatile infra-red detectors known. The intermediate compositions also benefit from the usual mechanisms which improve the mechanical properties of alloys.

Description: In addition to the usual abstracts of research reported since the previous retrospective, this issue comprises ten invited papers. The first four are reviews that cover the important topics of conductive oxide preparation, the modeling of amorphous materials (silicon carbide, for example), the nanoscale characterization of oxides and the effect of combined irradiation treatments.
The other six invited papers present recent experimental or theoretical studies of structural defects in gallium nitride, atomic-scale deformation processes in nanomaterials, micropipes in silicon carbide, radiation effects in garnets and boron diffusion in hafnia.
