Effect of Micron-Scale SiO2 Surface Coating on the Strength of Chemically Strengthened Glass
Abstract:
The influence of micron-scale SiO2 surface coating and orientation of the film surface on the strength of chemically strengthened glass was studied for the application to high speed train window glass. The glass samples with various thicknesses of 2 μm, 5 μm and 8 μm of SiO2 surface coatings on soda-lime silicate chemically strengthened glass were prepared and the strength of glass was tested by bicycle bending test when setting the coating surface to face up to or back to the impact. The results showed that the SiO2 film could significantly improve the bending strength of glass. Furthermore, the strength of the glass when coating surface backing to the impact was significantly greater than that when coating surface facing up to the impact. It might benefit from healing of cracks on glass surface by SiO2 coating.
