Abstract: Due to the special geographical position and the diversified habitats, there are rich Bamboo Resources in Yunnan, and Yunnan is one of the areas in the world with the most abundant bamboo species, ecological types, and natural bamboo forests. In this paper, the bamboo resources, bamboo industry and sustainable development of Yunnan are systematically studied.

Abstract: Dendrocalamus sinicus is an endemic species in southwestern Yunnan, China, and it is the the largest bamboo in the world. It can grow to more than 30m tall with 30cm in diameter. Its culms yield per unit area is 5-8 times as that of Phyllostachys pubscens that is now popularized as a major economic bamboo species in China. So it is one of the most excellent economic bamboo species in south China and in the tropical and subtropical areas of the world. Based On the investigation of the biological characteristics and present seed resources situation of Dendrocalamus sinicus, the paper discusses the limitations of its natural population distribution, its fragile growth and propagation, and its rich meaning in culture. The authors suggest that this species be included in the list of wild plants for priority protection in China, nature reserve of Dendrocalamus sinicus (ecological and cultural) be established in its main distribution areas and that its scientific protection and industrial development be carried out as soon as possible.

Abstract: Seedlings of Michelia macclurei, Cinnamomum camphora and Rhodoleia championii were placed in open-top chambers (OTC) with two ozonic treatments including E40 (nature air, 40 ppb) and E150 (150 ppb) and two water treatments. Physiological indexes such as chlorophyll, soluble sugar, soluble protein, proline, MDA and SOD of three seedling types were evaluated. With increasing experimental time, chlorophyll content generally decreased or remained steady, soluble sugar content increased followed by a decrease and SOD activity increased for the three seedling types in ozone treatment, drought treatment or ozone-drought intercross treatment. Contents of soluble protein and proline increased for the three seedling types in ozone treatment and drought treatment. The MDA content increased for M. macclurei and C. camphora in ozone treatment and drought treatment and for R. championii in the three stress treatments. Principal component analysis indicated that the resistance abilities of ozone, drought or intercross stress for the three seedling types was C. camphora seedlings > M. macclurei seedlings > R. championii seedlings.

Abstract: The germplasm resources of bamboos is very rich in Yunnan. Though the reaserch of bamboo diversity conservation is just beginning today, the insitu conservation, developing nature reserve, and exsitu conservation, setting up bamboos garden, have got a great achievement. The period of bamboo flowering is longer and the fruitification rate is lower, so the Collestion of seeds is difficulty. The flowering, fruitting of some bamboos and its seeds collectiong, storage and utilization are introduced in this paper.

Abstract: The effect of NaCl on seedling emergence, plant growth and ion accumulation for two sugar beet cultivars was evaluated. The result showed that seedling emergence in Tianyan309 was much lower than that in KWS3418 in the initial 6 days. High salinity markedly decreased final seedling emergence in both cultivars, especially in Tianyan309, while salinity had no adverse effect on total seedling emergence after the recovery experiment in both cultivars. Low salinity (86 mM NaCl) had no significant effect on shoot and root dry weights, while 171 and 257 mM NaCl inhibited shoot and root dry weights of two cultivars, especially for KWS3418. Concentrations of Na+ and Cl- in leaves were increased with increasing NaCl in both cultivars. There was no significant difference between two cultivars in concentrations of Na+ and Cl- in the leaves at different concentrations of NaCl, except that Cl- concentration in leaves of Tianyan309 was lower than that in KWS3418 at 257 mM NaCl. The characteristic of Cl- uptake and/or accumulation may relate to different salt tolerance of KWS3418 and Tianyan309.

Abstract: Late embryogenesis abundant (LEA) proteins play important roles in enhancing the resistance of plants to adverse stresses and promoting seeds development and maturation. The OsEm gene in rice is one of LEA protein-encoding genes, however, physical and chemical properties, phylogenetic relationship and protein-protein interaction network of it are still unknown. Here, the full length cDNA of OsEm was cloned using nested RT-PCR, the sequencing result was then computational analyzed using bioinformatics approaches. The results showed that OsEm encoded a high hydrophilic protein with small molecule weight, it is mainly composed of alpha helix, extended strand, beta turn, random coil and contains a conserved region with 20 amino acid residues. Phylogenetic analysis showed that OsEM protein has the nearest phylogenetic relationship to BiEM1, but has the distant phylogenetic relationship to BnEM6. Results of protein-protein interaction network showed the expression of OsEm gene was regulated by complexes of VP1/BZ8 or VP1/TRAB1. This work is helpful to further define the function of OsEm gene and provide useful information for improving the adverse stress tolerance of plants in the future.

Abstract: Evaluation of radiation dose is very important for the detection of radiation damage. γ-H2AX is a popular biological dosimeter to evaluate the radiation effect. Typically, bulky and expensive commercial flow cytometers are used to detect γ-H2AX. This paper presents a miniaturized and highly sensitive cytometer using a microfluidic chip for evaluating the radiation dose by detecting the mean immunofluorescence intensity of γ-H2AX. A compact optical focusing system and a shift-phase differential amplifier are designed to improve the detection sensitivity. Sample lymphocyte cells are stained by FITC fluorescent dye after being irradiated by UVC. Comparison experiments between the developed miniature cytometer and a commercial flow cytometer were conducted under different radiation doses. The developed microfluidic cytometer can also demonstrate a good linear correlation between the measured fluorescence intensity and the irradiation dose with a detection limit similar to that of the commercial flow cytometer. The developed cytometer can evaluate quantitatively the radiation dose by the mean fluorescence intensity of γ-H2AX with a significantly smaller amount of blood samples than a commercial flow cytometer.

Abstract: The gait disorder system for the elderly that applies external stimulation often shows only limited patient outcomes, while prescribed medicines or physical therapies performed by professional therapists are effective in improving sensory functions and the ability to walk of the elderly. One alternative that could be considered in solving this problem is applying additional stimulation from outside of the body onto the sensory receptors distributed on the skin, inducing improvement in the ability to walk and in other motor capabilities that allow the elderly to perform routine tasks. The purpose of this study is to measure the reactions of the body to stimulation applied to the somatosensory system, which is related to the surface of the human body, and to apply such measurements to improve one's ability to walk.

Abstract: This study was conducted to develop a liquid cell smear device for the early detection of cancer cells. Liquid based cytology (LBC) diagnosis cancer using epithelial cells in the early diagnosis of cancer. LBC has advantages of repeated testing using cells collected once, and of producing a slide with the transparent background compared to the manually prepared slide. In this study, a liquid cell smear device that automatically prepares the slide for LBC was developed. For the efficient separation of alcohol, which is a main component of cell preserving solution used for the preservation of liquid cells, from cells, the cylinder and solenoid valve with high durability against alcohol were used. For the control of the moving distance of the suction cylinder and smear-mover, a stepping motor was used to implement the mode corresponding to the cells. The implemented mode was comprised of five modes (uterine cervical, sputum, urine, body fluids, and the thyroid cells) for LBC. In addition, the manual mode and the cleaning mode to filter impurities deposited in the hose, cylinder, and solenoid valve were implemented. The slide was prepared according to each mode, and the smear condition of the prepared slide was examined by a cytopathologist in order to determine the optimal smear condition. As a result, the optimal slide was prepared in the condition of 3 for uterine cervical cells, 8 for sputum cells, 10 for urine cells, 1 for body fluid, and 6 for thyroid cells.
