Mg Alloy Foam Fabrication via Powder Metallurgy and its Compressive Behavior

Article Preview

Abstract:

This paper reports the required conditions for fabricating Mg-Al alloy foams starting from metallic powders, where CaCO3 was selected as the blowing agent. The molar ratio of Al varied from 0 to 50%. Mg-Al alloy foams with porosity of 30%~80% and pore size around 0.5~2.0 mm were prepared successfully. The process to make foams includes two main procedures, i.e. foamable precursor preparation and foaming procedure. The effects of the three main parameters, i.e. compaction degree, Al addition, foaming temperature on the foaming results were discussed. Finally, the compressive behaviors of Mg alloy foams were investigated.
