Grain Boundary Relaxation in a Fe-Cr-Al Alloy

Abstract: The features of grain boundary relaxation of a (wt.%)Fe-25Cr-5Al alloy have been investigated using a multifunction internal friction apparatus. The grain boundary relaxation peak appears at about 630oC on the internal friction-temperature curves for the alloy. The peak temperature shifts toward high temperature with increasing frequency. In terms of Arrihenius relation, the activation energy is calculated to be 4.07(±0.15)eV and the pre-exponential factor is 6.2×10^-24±1s. Grain boundary relaxation strength remarkably decreases with increasing grain size. When grain size reaches 520μm, the grain boundary relaxation peak almost disappears.

Temperature Dependence of the Flow Stress of Body-Centered-Cubic Metals

Abstract: By comparing the properties of dislocation-related relaxation processes in internal friction spectra and the tensile data of various iron alloys, we found that the temperature dependence of the flow stress is governed by the total distribution of the activation energies of dislocation motion. The derived model explains the origin of an anomalous temperature dependence of the flow stress in thermally aged Fe-1%Cu alloys, and Fe-x%Cr alloys as a function of Cr concentration, as well as the non-uniform temperature dependence of the flow stress in pure Fe.

Static Strain Aging in Fe-Mn-N Alloys Investigated by Impulse Excitation Internal Friction Analysis

Abstract: The Fe-Mn-N alloys used in the present study showed an unexpected increase of both the yield strength and the ultimate tensile strength after prestraining and strain aging. In order to understand the mechanism of this phenomenon, which is due to solute N, static strain aging tests were carried out in combination with resonant impulse excitation internal friction analysis. It is shown that the interaction between thermal kinks and solute N atoms plays an essential role in the increase of the tensile strength.

The Effect of Annealing on the Internal Friction in ECAP-Modified Ultrafine Grained Copper

Abstract: A detailed study of anelastic effects in submicrocrystalline copper using resonance (~70 kHz, 2 K to 320 K) and sub-resonance (0.05-100 Hz, 300 K to 675 K) techniques was carried out. Several relaxation processes were found in the temperature range of 2 K - 675 K: the relaxation loss peaks (Q^-1) near 35 (P1) and 90K (P2) with the activation energy and the pre-exponential factor (H₁≈ 0.02 eV, τ_ο1 ≈ 10^-9s and H₂ ≈ 0.09 eV, τ_ο2 ≈ 10^-11s) similar to those of the Bordoni and the Niblett-Wilks peaks in coarse-grained Cu. This suggests that the peaks are due to the thermally activated motion of dislocation kinks in the primary and secondary Peierls relief. The mean values of activation parameters (H₃ ≈1.4-1.6 eV, τ_ο3 ≈10^-17s) of a third thermally activated peak (P3), which was significantly broadened, can be interpreted as a grain boundary peak with uncoupled activation parameters H₃^*≈0.45 eV and τ_ο3^*≈10^-14s. A pseudo peak P_Ris associated with irreversible recrystallization processes. The influence of annealing on the observed effects is also discussed.
