LME can cause dramatic reduction in time-to-failure and thus in engineering strength and ductility.
Stress-induced dissolution occurs at the advancing front of the channel, while redeposition on the free-of-stress walls of the crack in its blunted region.
Even small residual stress is sufficient therefore for meeting the threshold condition (2) and allowing the GB crack advance.
