The solid-liquid interface is advancing faster on the left side than on the right side as fluid flow is descending near the left wall while it is ascending near the right wall, as shown in Fig. 11 (b).
In the corresponding diagram of velocity evolution, the solidification front advances very slowly at the beginning, and accelerates while the solidification front is evolving from planar to cellular to dendritic pattern, before approaching smoothly the isotherm rate.
