To reach a point where a-PbO can be employed as an effective direct photoconverter in the radiology clinic, it is necessary to elucidate both the layered structure and the role of oxygen vacancies, and perhaps to engineer solutions for the complications that they represent.

Introduction: The Road of Biomimetics
The ideals of biomimicry are considered as some of the most prosperous ones among materials scientists of the modern day, who increasingly follow the biomimetic approach to design and fabrication of advanced materials [1-6].
Furthermore, an unchanging pattern of enamel matrix protein bands in the advanced secretory stage of amelogenesis is a sign of a steady, well-balanced state in which the ratio between enamel matrix components is kept constant during relatively long periods of time [26].
Besides, as the number of atomic elements available to humans in the design of advanced materials and structures far exceeds that employed by the living organisms, it is natural to expect that not merely imitating and copying, but being inspired by, learning from and going beyond the natural design is the way forward for materials science and engineering of the future [153].
Experiments on using phage peptide libraries [81,157] and engineering novel specific protein sequences [73] based on adsorption studies present some of such attempts to go beyond Nature.

Recent advances in both silicon sensitivity and miniaturization of optical components have allowed the apparatus in Fig.4B to be evolved to the level where an image intensifier is no longer required to determine the spectral output from materials with moderate ML efficiencies, i.e., the ML emission is diffracted by the grating and detected without signal amplification by the linear diode array.

In order to maintain adiabatic conditions, the engineering and design solution of ARC is of a key importance [108].
The representation of results obtained by ARC developed by Townsend and Tou is still used by today’s users of advanced equipment, but unfortunately, the accepted terminology is somewhat confusing.
