Abstract: To deal with the serious impact on urban traffic, society, ecological environment and energy system by the aggregated motorization in cities, both China and foreign countries have gradually come up with a series of policies and initiatives targeting at the non-motorized traffic by cyclists and pedestrians. Under such a background, the research studies four sub-districts of Tuanjie hu, Hujialou, Liulitun and Balizhuang at the central area of Chaoyang District, Beijing, and tries to find the interrelation between the preferences of non-motorized agents in densely populated urban central area and the construction of non-motorized transportation network. By discussing the non-motorized travel routes, road patterns and facility layout according to various needs of the target group, the research aims to deal with the construction of non-motorized transportation system in the densely populated central area in Beijing. Through questionnaire and interview, the research conducts an in-depth survey on residents travel purposes, behavioral regularities and users assessment for the current non-motorized routes, and acquires an understanding about their preferences on choice of roads due to different travel purposes, problems from using current non-motorized routes and thereby their preferred road patterns, and the preferred facility layout that meet local residents behavioral regularities. By simulating the optimization of two types of non-motorized routes for commute and recreation with the Cost Distance Module, the research constructs three types of non-motorized routes: comprehensive, commute and recreation, with a total length of 65.8km. The research also reconstructs the road patterns for urban expressway, major arterial, minor arterial and connector on the road section for commute and recreation, adding green belts and low road fence to segment non-motorized routes. Meanwhile, the research establishes a three-tier NMT facility service center system which incorporates bicycle service (ranging from bike renting, parking and maintenance to vehicle shift), NMT signs, informational signs, vendor booths, public bathrooms, benches, and trash bins. Thus an integral non-motorized traffic network at the urban central area of Beijing is built up.

Abstract: historical performance of fire fighting and rescue force represents a series of comprehensive characteristics derived from the analysis of fire fighting and rescue response data and related safety indexes over a given time period. The research and analysis of a citys historical performance of fire fighting and rescue force will provide a valuable basis and reference for the planning and evaluation of the citys fire fighting and rescue force layout. In this paper, the author proposes a historical performance evaluation index system of city fire fighting and rescue force based on fire response time, fire truck & appliances dispatched and firefighters dispatched, along with evaluation mode and approach. The evaluation result will give a hint to the improvements to be made in construction and layout of the citys fire fighting and rescue force, which outlines the reference frame for enhancement of the citys fire safety and reasonable firefighting planning.

Abstract: Through a statistic analysis of the changes of land composition and land-use distribution before and after the completion of Nanjing Metro Line 1, this study summarizes the influence mechanism of the urban rail transit on urban land use and spatial development from the dimensions of time and space. After the on-site investigation and research of the urban land use and the spatial development in different type subway stations in the inner city and the new town area along Nanjing Metro Line 1, the influence mechanism is tested and verified so as to offer reference value for the benign interaction between the rail transit and urban land use together with the spatial development.

Abstract: The rapid urban development of Chinas city during the transitional period has received extensive academic research and policy attention. This study inquired into the process, features and impact factors of spatial expansion in Wuhan during the transitional period. This study conducted a systematic research of the transitional urban space and using data analysis to explore the spatial logic and inherent laws underlying the spatial expansion of Wuhan. Based on data analysis via SPSS, three primary components closely related to urban land use change are identified. Corresponding influence factors under the spatial expansion are explored. Economic development, urbanization level, industrial structure, the foreign investment and other indicators drive the spatial expansion of Wuhan, and it is urgent to optimize the current space framework of the downtown areas for the creation of a sustainable and effective urban space form. This study also indicates the new trends of spatial expansion and relevant recommendations for the future development of Wuhan.

Abstract: Xian Sanxuejie district is a typical historic district of the city. Presently this type of traditional districts is surrounded by many modern buildings due to the rapid urban expansion. The historic districts are facing problems of poor courtyard micro-climate conditions and low living level, which has become the bottleneck of historic districts sustainable development. This paper studies thermal environment, luminous environment, solar environment and wind environment from a new perspective using Ecotect building environment analyzing software. The author explores micro-climate improving method suitable for traditional courtyard in order to promote micro-climate quality of historic district and to improve the comfort of local residences. The purpose is to achieve sustainable development of historic districts.
