Strength and ductility are two of the most important mechanical properties of structural materials, but this usually involves a trade-off, because of the fundamental inverse proportionality of these two features. Since the 1980s, bulk nanostructured materials have emerged as a new class of material having unusual structures and, as a result, have attracted increasing attention. Unfortunately, most bulk nanostructured materials still do not evade the strength-ductility trade-off dilemma, and usually have very poor ductility. The poor ductility of bulk nanostructured materials has indeed become a seemingly insurmountable obstacle to the widespread technological application of structural bulk nanostructured materials.

Description: Functionally Graded Materials (FGMs) are multifunctional materials which exhibit spatial variations in composition and microstructure; created for the specific purpose of achieving variations in thermal, structural or functional properties. They are presently at the forefront of materials research and are receiving worldwide attention. They enjoy a broad range of application; including, for example, biomechanical, automotive, aerospace, mechanical, civil, nuclear and naval engineering. New applications are continually being discovered and developed.

Description: The Aluminium Cast-house Technology Conference in Australia is truly an international event where leaders in the aluminium industries of the five developed continents meet every two years. The participants have the opportunity to listen to acknowledged experts in the field and to learn of the latest developments in aluminium processing technology. It is important, especially during the current worldwide financial crisis, to learn what means are available for reducing costs and to learn how others have adjusted to the present situation.

Description: Materials processing engineering is currently considered to be an interdisciplinary engineering field. Learning and training in materials processing must therefore be accompanied by diverse sets of workshops and practical laboratory experiments. In general, the equipment which is required to be available in these laboratories or workshops is very expensive and can become obsolete within a few years. On the other hand, the continual evolution of materials inevitably drives change. However, innovative education techniques, based upon information and communications technologies, are currently under development, with the aim of improving the teaching of materials processing.

This book comprises state-of-the–art reviews written by acknowledged experts who are active in sintering science.
It includes seven invited reviews by authors hailing from five countries: J-M.Chaix (France) discusses quantitative aspects of the microstructures and modeling of sintering; with the technical aspects of image-analysis - including that of nanostructured materials - adding extra value. Z.S. Nikolic (Serbia) provides a theoretical review of the simulation of liquid-phase sintering, particularly under microgravity conditions, and extensively and critically reviews the results reported in the sintering literature. A.L. Lisovsky (Ukraine) opens up the vista of deconsolidation of polycrystalline skeletons in sintered composite materials, and deals with systems having more than one refractory solid phase, and with nanodispersed composite materials. G.S. Upadhyaya ( India) reviews the Samsonov model for the electronic mechanism of sintering, and its relevance; pointing out that, although the model is a qualitative one, it has great utility as a predictive tool and that various case-studies drawn from real multi-phase material systems are a testimony to the value of Samsonov’s model.

Description: The aim of this special volume is to give an overview of the historical background and present status of eco-materials processing and design for materials research, and to foresee future trends in the field. Serious global and environmental problems have led the materials manufacturing industries to monitor closely the formation and accumulation of carbon dioxide and other deleterious gases in the atmosphere, as well to reduce raw materials use and energy consumption and limit other factors which reflect the environmental impact of the industry.
